Despite our culture's dominant narratives, it is my belief that health is deeply personal and unique to every person. I also firmly believe that 1) every person has the right to define what health means to them and 2) constantly working towards better health does not make someone more valuable or worthier of respect.
Our mainstream health industry's obsession with thinness as a synonym for health and with forcing bodies to comply with beauty norms is, at this point, undeniably damaging and dysfunctional. Intentional weight loss plans, restrictive diets and punishing exercise are not effective for achieving long-term feelings of well-being or for encouraging long-term adherence to healthy behaviors.
As a HAES-aligned Certified Health Coach, working within a Body Liberation framework, it is my mission to help you sort out, set up, and stick to the healthy behaviors that make your life more enjoyable. Healthy Behaviors include, but are not limited to: respecting our bodies, getting enough sleep, getting enough fresh air, creating and maintaining healthy relationships, drinking enough water, eating enough nutritious foods, moving our bodies, and avoiding and/or healing from the internalization of shame that living within a white supremacist, capitalist, patriarchal system causes. I help clients take a holistic and sustainable approach to health that empowers them to appreciate the connection between mind, body and spirit.
I don't/ won't put my clients on diets or specific exercise plans. I help my clients understand that the concept of health is far bigger and more complex than our culture's obsession with intentional weight loss would have us believe. I help my clients sort through their own values, beliefs and feelings around health and what they want for their lives in both the short and long-term. From there, we work together to figure out a plan of action and accountability that will help them achieve their goals.
