“Health At Every Size” (HAES) refers to a movement that 1) accepts and respects the fact of Body Diversity; 2) believes that everyone deserves access to the health-related endeavors they want/need to take part in; 3) believes that ALL bodies deserve respect and compassionate care; 4) rejects the notion that being thin is synonymous with being healthy; and 5) understands and is concerned about the UNHEALTHY lengths folks have been manipulated into going to in order to achieve thinness.
AT LEAST, This is what I mean when I say that I am a HAES-aligned professional.
HAES does NOT mean that all bodies are automatically healthy regardless of size or that health does not matter. Indeed, HAES-aligned professionals are more concerned about actual HEALTH than non-HAES-aligned fitness and health professionals who are still focused, primarily, on physical appearance.
If you are serious -- or are even JUST getting serious -- about creating a world that is far less fatphobic, less likely to create and perpetuate eating disorders, and more likely to treat every single body with the respect and dignity that we deserve, PLEASE stop supporting traditional, thinness-obsessed, fatphobic fitness, yoga and movement professionals! I can't name them here but I know you know who they are -- and they are making BILLIONS off of people's body-hatred and damaging weight cycling.
Please INTENTIONALLY support HAES-aligned professionals with your money and your time and your energy. We need you. This Movement needs you.
Body Liberation Oriented Movement Resources
Please consider taking your money and time commitment away from traditional, weight-centered, fatphobic sources for fitness, yoga, dance, and general movement instruction and putting them into THESE Body Liberation oriented movement sources instead:
(Please note: I am not 100% familiar with ALL of the professionals linked on ALL of these resources -- especially the Body Positive Fitness Finder and the HAES registry – please research the person/studio that you choose to try out and make sure it’s a good fit for what you’re looking for! It’s possible that not ALL of them are truly HAES-aligned, Fat Positive, or weight-neutral.)
